Colloquium: Operations Research

by Mathematics Department, University of Georgia, April 21, 2009

Charlie EppsAl Blumstein, a real OR hero
Charlie Epps, the hero of Numb3rs                                                          Al Blumstein, a real OR hero

This was a presentation for the math students (mainly graduate students) at UGA concerning the nature of Operations Research as a possible profession.

I used the TV show Numb3rs as an example of the types of projects that might be undertaken by OR professionals in the criminal justice field.  I also introduced Al Blumstein, an OR professional who actually created solutions for criminal justice problems.

I gave some definitions, for example, OR is the Science of Better, and listed a number of the techniques used in OR.  I talked about the OR process, the skills required for an OR professional, and gave examples of my past projects.

Finally, I discussed a real OR problem in some detail.
