Kakiemon bowl, c 1670 AD |
|
Unique pair of saki jars made by Zengoro Wazen (Eiraku), one of Japan's greatest potters. From a long line of potting experts (the eleventh generation), his grandfather Ryozen Eiraku died in 1841; his father Hozan Eiraku was born in 1793 and died in 1860. Zengoro went to the Yoshidaya kiln in Kaga Province and stayed there for six years where he made the famous Kinrande-Yao, which bears his signa- |
ture, derived from the Chinese 'rouge-vif' of the Yung-Io period. These pieces weren't inferior to the originals from China and are regarded to be among ceramic masterpieces of the world. These coral and gold brocade style sakis are with Chinese motifs, the Phoenix bird and 4-clawed dragon, surrounded by waves, conch and cloud-scrolls. In museum condition. Height 6". Ref Jenyns "Japanese Porcelain," Praegar 1965 and Brinkley "Japan" Millet Co. 1902, pp. 219 thru 225. |
